THE NAME HARING
West-Friesland 15th and 16th century
The first mentioning of the name Haring in West Friesland
(part of the Dutch province Noord-Holland) can be found in the
"Chroniick of Hoorn" by D.Velius. A special
event in the year 1435 was mentioned, where Pieter Haring, citizen of Hoorn, due
to a wager, went over the frozen Zuiderzee from Staverden to Enkhuizen with 12 ox's,
a distance of 20 miles. In the same chronicles the heroic acts of Jan Haring in
1573 were mentioned. In the civil war against Spain (1568-1648) the Dutch tried
to chase away the Spaniards around the city of Haarlem in 1573. Jan Haring
could stop the Spaniards for a while on the Diemerdijk
, so many civilians were able to escape (18th-19th march 1573). On the
11th October 1573 during the naval battle on the Zuiderzee, the flag on the ship
of admiral Bossu (Spain) was pulled down by Jan Haring. This caused a lot of
confusion by the Spaniards and they lost the battle. Bossu was captured, Jan
Haring died during the event.
It is almost certain, that our family is not connected to the persons named in
the chronicles of Hoorn.
West-Friesland 18th century
The first mentioning of the name Haring in West Friesland of witch it is certain that we decent from, was found in the marriage register of the Court of Zwaag on 18th January 1705. In this marriage register and in the Roman Catholic Baptismal Register of Zwaag from 1734 till 1773 the name Heering is used. In the 18th century the name was written in many different ways such as Haaring, Haring, Häring, Heering and Hering. This was probably caused by the fact, that the family members were unable to read or write their own name. In the marriage register of the Court of Zwaag in 1705 it says, that Barent Lambertsz. Heering came from Weerselo in Twente (werslo in twent), the east part of the Netherlands near the German border. Later in the 18th and 19th century the name Heering was written as Haring, the explanation is most probably, that in West-Friesland the fish "haring" is written as haring, but pronounced as heering.
Twente 17th-18th century
The baptismal, marriage and
funeral registers in Weerselo start in 1701, therefore the birth of Barend could
not be found (probably around 1680).
On the 27th February 1709
Lambertus Heerninck and Euphemia Wilming (of Welmong)
are married in Weerselo. Lambertus could be a brother of Barend.
Recently (2008) mr. A.H.G. Verouden discovered
the (most likely) parents of Barend in the Reformed Marriage Register of
Oldenzaal (Oldenzaal is a larger city near Weerselo). Lambert Herinck is married
to Gesen ter Haar, both born in the Lutte.
On the 27th February 1709 Lambertus Heerninck
and Euphemia Wilming (of Welmong) are married in Weerselo. Lambertus could be a
brother of Barend.
Netherlands 18th and 19th century
Almost all people with the name Haring in West-Friesland are family members. From other people with the name Haring in the 18th and 19th century found outside West-Friesland (Amsterdam, Sloten, Zaandam, Monnickendam, Velsen, Heusden, Den Helder,Den Haag, Rotterdam, Hellevoetsluis, Hilversum, Zwolle) no relationship could be astablished.
Origen and meaning
Names ending on -ing, -ink and -inck (Neder-Saksische 2nd case) are quite common in Twente, they mean "son of ..". The first part of the name Haring, Heering, Hering, etc is Haro (also Hare, Hari, Heri or Hero). Haro is an old German first name meaning master or army.
LIVING CIRCUMSTANCES 18th and 19th CENTURY
The living circumstances in
West-Friesland showed a decline from the 17th to the 19th century. The economy
was decreasing as was the number of people living in this area. This is also
found in the decrees in tax income (20% less over a period of 100 years).
The Haring family is also short on money, most funerals are "pro deo" , free of
charge.
A poor widower with small children (and without social security of today) only
has one solution, remarry as soon as possible. This happened regularly in our
family.
The economic crisis was caused by the growing international competition and
protection policy in a lot of countries. Rich Dutch merchants who earned their
fortune in the 17th century in Indië
retired in the 18th century as renter or banker. Employment decreased as a
consequence. Especially the 4th war with England in 1780 had disasterus
consequences for our international trade. Cattle breeding was hit by illnesses,
cold winters and dry summers. Agriculture
in West-Friesland was confronted with more salt groundwater due to the dry
summer, witch caused lower profit. This groundwater was unsuitable for use at
home so people had to use rainwater for drinking, cooking and cleaning. The
storage of drinking water was very primitive and was a source for all kind of
sicknesses (diarrhea, malaria and cholera). More than 70% of all children died
before they were 3 years old. This situation only improved after 1870 when
marches were drained and sewers were made in the cities and towns. As a result the population grew very fast. In the second part of the 19th century the
economy grew again, new industries were established, roads and canals were
made. Education and medical care improved considerably.

Introduction
Most readers are familiar
with the family tree, pedigree charts are less known.
A pedigree chart gives an overview of the parents, grandparents, great
grandparents, etc.
The number of parents doubles every generation you go back in time unless
someone marries a family member (share the same grandparents or great
grandparents). This happens quite often in close communities.
The more you go back in time the greater the problems to find the information, the reasons are:
The number of parents doubles every next generation
The geographical spread increases
Older information is harder to get (archives incomplete or without index)
Missing archives
Background information
On the religion of the ancestors the following general remarks can be made:
The ancestors of Jacobus Johannes Haring are Roman Catholic
The ancestors of Wilhelmina Frederika Hoffman are Protestant (Nederduits Reformd). Differences are noted in the genealogy..
