Born in the parish of Donaghmore.
On 14-10-1857 Joseph enlisted the army in Belfast for a period of 10 years to serve in the 98th regiment, which later became the 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment.
From his medical records in 1857: hight 64 inch (160 cm), circumference of chest 39 inch (98 cm), eyes hazel, hair brown.

Informant was Rose Howie,daughter, of 19 Ardgowan Place.
