bullet  General Notes:

Reuben McCallum was born into a working class family with his father working in the Weaving Industry as a Pattern Drawer. Little is known about Reuben's early life and education and it is not until 1861 that he emerges from the shadows as a Police Officer with the Glasgow City Police Department. At that time he was residing as a lodger in the home of John Turner and his wife Agnes McIntyre Turner and their four year old son William Turner. at 9 Kirk Street, Glasgow. John, was a Police Officer colleague - presumably working with Reuben in the same department. The National Census of 1861 shows that eleven people lived in that small home. The fact of this lodging is destined to take a dramatic turn within a few months of the Census when John Turner died suddenly having suffered from Tuberculosis at the age of thirty one leaving his grieving widow to suffer his loss. It seems that Reuben, being a good and kind man, took it upon his shoulders to comfort Widow Turner and within a few weeks of her bereavement we discover her walking down the isle of the Presbyterian Church in Royal Terrace, Glasgow on April 9th. 1862 to become a blushing bride for the second time in her young life.
