Maria stond de familie bekend als 'tante Ma'. Zij trouwde met Klaas Schoof en woonde op de Drieboomlaan in Hoorn. Ze kregen een flink gezin.
Maria is overleden aan de gevolgen van diabetes. Ze klaagde al jaren over voortdurende dorst, maar zo bekend was diabetes (en de symptomen) toen nog niet.
