General Notes:
I remember my grandmother, Hilda Haring Tersteeg, talk about skating on the frozen water in wooden skates. She was a small girl when she came here. She married Gerardus (George) Tersteeg who was from Gelderland on the German border. He told me the story of being in the large boat and not allowed to go up until they landed in New York City. That must have been awlful to travel for 3-4 weeks, bring their own food, sleep on board planks and not see the sunshine for that long. My grandfather's family did not want the boys to serve in the military under the Kaiser so they left Holland while the 5 boys were still young. But they came to America, worked hard and made a success. That was the dream of so many. (Annette Penhallegon Gauthier, september 2015)
